Telling Stories began with people doing just that, telling traditional stories to students and staff at North Melbourne Primary School. Parents who speak a language other than English at home were invited to school to tell a traditional story from their country of origin. Lots of parents responded and students in Years 2, 3 and 4 listened to stories in Mandarin, Malay, Arabic, Somali, Spanish and Urdu. Interpreters helped with the English translation of the stories.
It was great for all of us to hear different languages in our classrooms. It prompted some students to start telling some of the stories they grew up with to their classmates and teachers. One of these we chose to publish: Dhegdheer.

BIG FISH from Sudan
DHEGHDEER from Somalia
YU GONG from China.
